Murder Mystery Night A Huge Success!

One Friday night, in September 2009, Murder Mystery Night took place with Club Members, friends and families joining the party atmosphere in the Freemasons Hall in Banbury.
The Lois Weedon Players entertained us in a professional and clever way keeping us in suspense, right to the very end. Not one of the 37 guests managed to identify the murderer, although next time we will know better.
The food and wine were fine, the service was good and the pantomime style atmosphere was great. More please!
Well done to Derek and Helena for the organisation and a jolly good time.

We welcome Sandy Williams as this year's Rotary Club President

The Cherwell Rotary Club welcomed in their new President, Sandy Williams at the Presidents handover meeting on Tuesday 7th July at the cricket club in Bodicote.
Founded in 1997 the Cherwell Rotary Club now has 39 members with new member numbers increasing. The club is one of two Rotary clubs in Banbury but also part of a wider organisation and regular contact is maintained with other Rotary Clubs in the district, across Great Britain, Ireland and all over the world.
The meeting was an opportunity for the club to reflect on club events and performance over the previous year whilst looking forward to the year ahead. Club events in the past year have included; the annual Beer Festival, Christmas Float, Kid’s Out and the Children’s Swimathon to name a few. The Club has also been involved in numerous local projects to support the local community.

Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell Take ‘Kids Out’
On 10th June 2009 we set off for Frank Wise School for our annual Kids Out trip. Over the years we have been lucky with the weather but this year we were very much expecting and prepared for the worst! Four Rotarians turned out to help: Sandy, Angela, Mark and Philip. We were also pleased to be joined by Valerie Currie and a colleague of Philip from Norbar - Graham Daniels.

As usual, getting 22 special needs children and all of the paraphernalia onto two vehicles is like mobilising a small army but by shortly after 9.30 we were on our way. On getting off the coach at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, it immediately started to rain and the coats and umbrellas came out. However, by wonderful good fortune, it soon dried up and stayed dry until we were heading home.

After 90 minutes touring the Park in two groups, we met up again for a picnic lunch provided by Norbar for all of the children, staff and helpers. The aim is to provide a lunch which is both healthy and fun so, yes, the sandwiches and fruit were followed by mini muffins and flapjacks!
The highlight of the day is always the train and this was eagerly anticipated by the children. After negotiations with the driver, all 40 of us boarded the train for an exciting ride around the park. To finish a perfect day, we then enjoyed a few minutes in the playground before returning to the bus (and a chance for a quick nap for some of us)!
As usual, the children amazed us with their excellent behaviour and positive attitude - they are a pleasure to be with.
The patience, competance and kindness of the Frank Wise staff is a joy to witness and always leaves us deeply impressed and feeling rather humble. Speaking of which, we were sorry to hear that Sarah Norman, the Head of Key Stage One at Frank Wise and our coordinator for Kids Out, will be moving on to an Assistant Head Master position at a special needs school in Peterborough at the end of the school year. I am sure that all of the Rotarians who have met Sarah will wish her well.

Spring Clean Day in Oxfordshire
On Saturday 28th March 2009 Rotary members of the Banbury Cherwell club helped to clear litter from the streets of Banbury. They worked for 2 hours and managed to collect an amazing amount of rubbish that had been left to fester by the side of the road. They cleared a two mile stretch of the Oxford Road from the Bodicote flyover down to Twyford.
A couple of cars sounded their horns hopefully in appreciation of what our club members were doing. The biggest piece of litter found was a truck tire and the weirdest was a shopping bag containing a pint of milk and 1/2 pound of butter! All in all a good days work and as you will see from the rubbish collected it was well worth the effort.
